How We Spent Our Summer Vacation

Good morning!

Today I'll make a quick resume of our journey and how we ended up in South Texas instead of Iowa, our intended destination.

The first night, my husband insisted that we not pester my sister no. 3 and husband by stopping in Tucson (the logical place).  But as we drove in, he said, "Would you like to be with your sister?" Of course, I said yes and we phoned them up to be invited in. We stayed for one night, and on the next day set off again.

As we drove out of town, Theo made a haphazard swerve to correct his lane and drove over a bunch of stuff in the highway; we continued on our merry way and outside of Benson AZ we were rewarded with a flat tire and a visit from the AAA.  Riding on the "donut", we went to a repair place where we were advised to return to Tucson as there was no place in Benson or Willcox where a matching tire might be obtained. So back we went to the home of no's. 3, where all that got taken care of. Off we went again on Tuesday, with only minor damage to traffic pylons near the turn onto Houghton.

Well, we made it to San Antonio, where no. 5 and husband welcomed us kindly. Oh--I forgot to mention that we had decided against turning up from Las Cruces to head for Cedar Rapids that way--because of the tornado activity along every step of the way on that route through OK and Kansas.  During that time I believe that Joplin MO was leveled as we saw on the news.

We had a wonderful time in SA TX with no's 5.  Great house. Great bed. Wonderful yard and piazza they constructed with their own 2 hands.  GOOD FOOD both at home and out.  More about the food tomorrow.

Since the weather was still terrible in the Midwestern states we'd have to drive through, we opted instead to go down to Brownsville for a quick visit to sister no. 2 and her husband.  Brownsville was warm and wonderful and windy as always. I love to wake up in the morning to the sound of mourning doves, as one did in Tucson, San Antonio, and Brownsville. Here in Chula Vista, you wake up to crows if you're lucky. Once in a great while, to some songbird---maybe.

Oh , I forgot to mention that Theo was nutty as a fruitcake on all parts of this trip, due to taking Cipro all this time.  In SA we went to the ER to try to get his meds straightened out and I took over the disposition of them with a total ignorance of what he takes. Luckily I'd made a copy of them at home but could not define them by sight and he didnt bring the containers of course. There are about eleven of them. Terrible task to sort them out, unknowing.

We went shopping at antique malls and shops in all the places except Brownsville. In Brownsville we went to lunch with No. 2's pals from UTB and I'll tell you what I ate tomorrow.  No. 2 and I had the all too rare experience of playing duets together for a couple of hours.  It was wonderful.

We left Brownsville on June 2, wending our way up Hwy. 77 for a change.  We went through Refugio, Goliad, Cuero and Gonzalez, all charming South Texas towns, on our way up to SA. I'd move tomorrow to any of them; they are wonderful. The court houses alone are worth a journey. We stopped exhausted outside the NW part of San Antonio, nearly at Boerne (pronounced Burney), and then took off the next day for home.  All in all we were gone for 16 days.  Sixteen harrowing, rewarding days.

All of us siblings are not too young any more (except for no's 4 and 5) and we may not be as intact a group as we've been when next we meet.  We are 85, 82,80,77, 76,76, 70,69 and 66.  We did not make it to NC though I 'd have wanted to try.

We missed our granddaughter Miranda's graduation, and I will always be sorry that we did not make it there with Ben to have a mini-reunion over the weekend. Ah, well.  The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft aglee.  I made that up.

Now we are back and are already doctoring away to see what can be done with the Brain of Theodore to pull him back into shape. He drove home admirably well and improved in every way with every day that passed after finishing the Cipro, which I recommend that one not take without planning two weeks in close custody.  MaƱana we'll talk about FOOD.  Love to all , YAZZYBEL
